What the Index Measures
The Triumph Broker Buy Rate Index tracks average rates per mile paid to carriers across the contiguous 48 states in the US, segmented by dry van, flatbed, and reefer transport types. Each data point is based on real broker-to-carrier transactions, not estimates or models.
Geographic Scope
The 48 contiguous states in the US.
Canadian shipments are excluded to avoid issues like currency conversions and market dynamics that don't align with the domestic truckload market.
Transport Types Covered
Dry Van, Flatbed, and Reefer. All other equipment types—known and unknown—are excluded to maintain consistency across reporting periods.
How the Data Is Filtered
To ensure the index accurately reflects market conditions, only shipments with haul distances greater than 250 miles are included, as shorter hauls can introduce non-linear rate behavior that distorts per-mile calculations.
Rates are also trimmed at the 5th and 95th percentiles for each transport type and month, removing extreme values to minimize the impact of outliers.
All filtering thresholds are statistically validated to ensure the index captures genuine market movement.
Calculation Method
The index is calculated as the sum of carrier costs divided by the sum of valid distances for each month, by transport type.
Historical Coverage
Data goes back to 2020, enabling direct comparison against COVID-era freight market conditions—one of the most volatile periods in modern trucking history.
